It's not ghosting. It's a process problem
Most recruitment business owners blame the client when they go quiet.
"They were never that committed."
"It's just the market right now."
"We got unlucky with the timing."
And sometimes that's true.
But more often, it's a story we tell ourselves so we don't have to look at what we could've done differently.
Because here's what I've seen across hundreds of recruitment businesses at the £100K to £1M mark:
The pattern is usually the same.
The client goes quiet later.
But the real problem started much earlier.
Which is why I want to ask you something honest:
How many times have you tried to solve the ghosting problem?
Followed up more.
Followed up less.
Send better shortlists.
Wrote more detailed covering notes.
Dropped your fees hoping it would make clients more committed.
Chased harder.
Chased softer.
And yet...
It keeps happening.
Same pattern.
Different clients.
Same outcome.
Here's why.
Everything you've tried so far has been aimed at the wrong end of the problem.
Following up harder doesn't work...
Because the damage was already done before you sent the shortlist.
Better candidates don't work...
Because the client's lack of commitment has nothing to do with the quality of your work.
Softer fees don't work...
Because clients who aren't truly invested in the process will ghost you whether you charge £5K or £25K.
You've been trying to fix a back end problem with back end solutions.
But ghosting is a front end problem.
It starts in the first conversation.
Before the brief is taken.
Before a single CV is sent.
Before you've invested a minute of your time.
Clients ghost when they never felt a real commitment to the process in the first place.
And whose job is it to create that commitment?
Not theirs.
Yours.
Not in a forceful way.
Not in a "sign this or I won't work with you" way.
In the way a trusted senior partner would, by setting clear expectations, agreeing a way of working, and making it feel collaborative rather than transactional.
Most recruiters never do this.
They take the brief, get excited about the role, and start work.
And then wonder why the client treats them like a job board.
And that's exactly where nobody ever told you to look.
Until now.
Here's a challenge for you this week:
Think about the last client who went quiet.
Was there a moment, early on, where you handed control over without realising it?
That's usually where it starts.
The No More Ghosting Guide is a free PDF that unpacks exactly where the process breaks down and gives you the six step ANCHOR Framework to fix it before it costs you another placement.
One of the things inside that gets the most reaction:
The four real reasons your best clients go quiet mid process.
None of them are what you've been blaming.
