My eldest son, Drew, spent most of yesterday visiting his gran in her temporary care home…
She’s from my ex wife’s side of the family and has just turned 86… She’s in reasonably good shape for her age but is obviously getting older and more fragile as time goes on…
A few days ago she was having some trouble breathing… Nothing too serious in hindsight…
But at the time, it caused her enough panic to call the emergency services to her home…
When the ambulance got there, they were unable to put her on a stretcher because there simply wasn’t enough space in the room she was in…
Although my her house isn’t the biggest in the world, it’s definitely big enough for two paramedics and a stretcher… Or at least it would be ordinarily…
But my she’s, like a lot of elderly people I’d imagine, has a lot of what I can only really describe as… “stuff”…
Old videocassettes, ornaments, pictures, books… Just loads of stuff!
Nothing of any real financial value… Just items she’s picked up over the years and never thrown away…
Not a big problem in normal circumstances… But as she’s getting older it’s important that paramedics and other medical professionals are able to get in and do their job should they need to… It’s also important that she has enough space to walk around without the danger of tripping over an old dusty box of videocassettes…
So while she’s in the care home for a few days… my Son, his uncle and two of his cousins spent the day clearing out the house, putting things in boxes, throwing things away… A good old fashioned clear out…
And I already know she’s going to hate it!
She’s set in her ways and so any change is a bad thing in her view… Even though deep down she’ll know it’s necessary!
It’s not too dissimilar to some of the Recruitment/Staffing or Search business owners I speak to…
They’re set and there ways and so even though they can clearly see the potential implications of them not making changes in certain areas of their life or business… They’re dead set against it!
