A cupboard full of plastic bags

 

I have a cupboard full of plastic bags that I’m never going to use…

Not all at once, anyway…

There’s literally not one situation I can think of where I’d need to use all the bags I have in this cupboard….

I didn’t ever plan to have a cupboard full of plastic bags, it sort of just happened…

You see, I used to do my weekly food shop and throw the carrier bags it came in straight in the recycling…

Not a second thought…

But back in 2015, here in the UK rather than giving these carrier bags out for free, they started charging 5p for them…

Not a big amount at all… Almost insignificant…

But it subconsciously had an impact on how me and the rest of my family think and treat these plastic bags…

And the rest of the UK too…

I read the other day that the usage of plastic bags in supermarkets (grocery stores) is down 90% since 2015…

Why?

Because now, people only pay for one of these plastic bags if they’re truly committed to having one…

They only get one if they really need it…

People used to buy one item and take the free carrier bag without a second thought… Even if they didn’t really need it…

Now, if they can carry it in their hand without the use of the carrier bag, that’s what they’ll do…

AND…on the rare occasion they do take a plastic carrier bag, they’ll value it more…

And rather than just throwing it away when they get home, they’ll save it for another time…

You’ll see people bringing old carrier bags from home to do their weekly food shop…

And there’s a point to this…
