Coach Carter

I sat down with the Family and watched ‘Coach Carter’ over the weekend…

It’s actually one of my favourite films and I’ve seen it many times before.

(This email might ruin the plot for you if you haven’t seen it already…But it’s a good email, so you should continue reading anyway.)

Basically… It’s about a high school basketball coach (Ken Carter), who takes over the team at his former school (Richmond High).

The team was underperforming, losing games and ‘Carter’ was tasked with the job of turning things around….

On the surface, it looks like just another “Struggling High-School sports team changes its fortunes and goes on to win the championships” type story…

But Coach Carter is different…

Firstly…. Although the team do improve their results quite significantly on the court… They don’t actually go on to win the championships at the end of the film, it’s not the fairy-tale ending you might expect (spoiler alert) …

But the main reason this film is different is because it’s not JUST about Basketball… It’s more about what happens off the court!

Students of Richmond High were 80% more likely to end up dead or in jail than go to college…

The school had a high dropout rate and many members of the Basketball team where failing in their academic studies…

Upon taking over the team… Carter quickly sees that the athletes are rude and disrespectful, and are in need of discipline. He hands the players individual contracts, instructing them to attend all of their classes, sit in the front row of those classes, wear dress shirts and ties on game days, refer to everyone (players and coach alike) as “sir”, and maintain a 2.3 (C+) grade point average, among other requirements…

The team may not have won the championships, but all members DID eventually graduate and go on to attended college or university…

Beating the odds!

It’s actually based on a true story and I would recommend watching it if you haven’t seen it already…

Anyway… The big lesson from the film is the rules Coach Carter sets for himself and his team…

A set of criteria that every team member must meet in order to play…

If you didn’t meet the criteria or you break the rules… You didn’t play!

No ifs, no buts, no exceptions… You didn’t play!

This is exactly how Recruitment and Search Firm owners should be treating their business…

Your team of consultants must have a set of rules and criteria they MUST meet in order to work for you…

Your clients must have a set of rules and criteria they must meet before you even consider working with them….

And most importantly…. You should have your very own set of rules and criteria you set for yourself!

And if those rules and criteria aren’t met, you don’t get to play…

For your consultants, it means they don’t get to work for your firm…

For potential clients, it means they don’t get to use your services…

And for you, it means you don’t get the results you want!

The key is having a set of rules and criteria that guarantee results! A proven set of activities you can follow every day that will generate more leads, more clients and more revenue for your business…
