Delayed gratification

Was talking to some of the Recruitment and Search Business Owners we help this morning around the subject of “delayed gratification”…

It’s one of the secrets that separate top performing Recruitment and Search Business Owners from those who achieve only mediocre results….

Just in case you’re unfamiliar with the term here’s what I pulled directly from Wikipedia…

“Delayed gratification, or deferred gratification, is the resistance to the temptation of an immediate pleasure in the hope of obtaining a valuable and long-lasting reward in the long-term. In other words, delayed gratification describes the process that the subject undergoes when the subject resists the temptation of an immediate reward in preference for a later reward…”

Very few things in business give you instant success…

Sure, it’s possible to do a few things and experience what seem like overnight wins. However, for the most part, these overnight wins are still the consequence of accumulated actions over a certain period…

Success comes only after weeks, months, sometimes years of consistent behaviour and consistent action towards a certain goal….

Most Recruitment and Search Business Owners forgot this… And instead, obsess over the short term…

They reduce their fees or take on less than desirable clients in the short term, ignoring the impact it could have on the long-term…

They put off making that call or sending that email because of how it feels in the short term ignoring the results it could get them in the long term…

They hold onto underperforming because they attach to the short term discomfort they’d feel rather than the long term results…

Real top performers understand it’s about trusting the process over the long term and not expecting magic to happen overnight…

They make decisions and take action based on what they want tomorrow not just what feel comfortable today.

Let go of the short-term thinking… And start thinking long-term.
