Doing it in your mother-in-laws spare bedroom

One of the things we talked about at “Market Domination X’ was how to compete against the ‘big bad multi-national’ Recruitment/Search Firms and still come out on top.

No matter how long you’ve been in business, no matter how big or small your team is, whether you like it or not that’s who you’re competing against.

Unlike the world of sports…. There are no “minor leagues” in the Recruitment/Search business.

There’s no fairness.

If you start a company from your mother-in-law’s spare bedroom, you’re not just competing with the other “bedroom” Recruitment/Search Firms in your sector.

From day one you’re swimming with the sharks.

And even if you have a small office with a medium sized team, you’re not competing with just the other Recruitment/Search Firms with medium sized teams.

The big boys operate right next to you! In your space.

And unless you can find a way to beat them.

You’ll be forever fighting over the scraps of business they don’t want and working with clients who hammer you on price, don’t respect what you do and drain your energy and profits.

So how do you win?

Thing is, you actually have a very big competitive advantage (if you choose to use it)

The bigger a company gets, the further away the owner gets from the marketing and promotion of the business.

The owner stops doing what worked so well when he or she started out,

and instead of being hands on… Everything is left to fresh-faced college graduates with a degree in marketing or business management who have all the skills on paper but have no idea what it’s like to operate a business knowing your neck is on the line.

You think, act and behave differently when the money you’re spending on marketing isn’t actually yours, and your pay check is unaffected whether it works or not.

More often than not, the bigger a firm gets the more stupid they get.

And instead of doing what worked for them in the past. They start wasting money on big flashy branding without really knowing whether it’s working or not.

Think about it.

Marketing is the lifeblood of your business. Get wrong; you struggle for clients.

Get it right, you get all the clients you want, you get to charge the fees you deserve and your business grows year after year.

The reason your potential clients are buying from them instead of you is because it seems like the safer option.

But it only seems like the safer option because of the marketing they did when they were first starting out, not the marketing they’re doing now.

The firm with the better marketing wins.

This is good news for you… Because it means you’re not really competing with the “Big-Multinationals” … You’re competing with their marketing department.

And for the most part, their marketing department is filled with college graduates who don’t really know what they’re doing. If they did, they’d start a business of their own.

The bad news is unless you take the time to educate yourself on what really works when it comes to attracting clients into your business they’ll continue to beat you hands down.
