Marketing lessons from a dwarf

One of my all time favourite television series is ‘Game of Thrones’…

Not to ruin the plot for you if haven’t seen it yet…

But it’s full of sex, violence, ruthless killings and err… Dragons!

Sounds like a weird mix but trust me, it’s brilliant…

One of my favourite characters is a dwarf that goes by the name ‘Tyrion Lannister’…

Although he’s not the best looking bloke… He’s intelligent, funny, charming and a hit with the ladies….

Very early on in the show he gives one of the other characters ‘Jon Snow’, a piece of advice that has stuck with me ever since…

Jon Snow is a bastard…

And I mean that in the literal sense…

He was born out of wedlock when his father had an affair…

EVERYONE knows him as the bastard child…

Even amongst his own siblings…

The outcast…

He’s never seen as a full member of the family….

And he hate’s it!

He hides from it in many ways…

See’s it as an insult that can be used against him…

But Tyrion gives him the best advice…

Tyrion: “Let me give you some advice bastard. Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armour, and it can never be used to hurt you.”

He’s spot on of course…

And yes, you guessed it!..

It’s a lesson you can apply to your Recruitment or Search  Business…

So many Recruitment and Search Firm owners spend all their time and energy hiding who they are for fear of being judged, ridiculed or criticised….

They’re scared of putting their personality in their marketing for fear of losing sales…

They’re scared of standing for something…

So end up standing for nothing….

And so come across as yet another boring, vanilla, copy cat that doesn’t stand out in the market and doesn’t appeal to anyone in particular…

You need to take Tyrion’s advice…

Wear who you are like armour and no one can use it against you…

Sure you’ll piss some people off… But at the same time you’ll draw in your ideal clients more…

People buy from who they know, like and trust…

And people tend to trust you a lot more when you show a bit of backbone and actually stand for something….

Speak to you soon,

Until then…

Tale care, take action and be relentless….
