One of The Most Powerful Things I’ve Ever Learned About the Recruitment and Search Industry

One of the most powerful things I’ve ever learned came from the late, great Earl Nightingale. He said:

“If you’re in a situation and you don’t have any clear way forward and want for clear advice, look around and see what everyone else is doing and do the opposite”

We often paraphrase this as ‘the majority is always wrong’.

Unfortunately, this is, on close examination, obviously silly. I mean, everyone breathes, so to assume they’re wrong and to stop breathing is quickly fatal.

That’s why I think it’s useful to understand the full quote as I’ve given it, because it kinda puts it into context, at which point it becomes incredibly powerful and, in true 80/20 style, one of the few but very powerful guiding principles in life and business.

You can see concrete examples of this in the Recruitment and Search industry every day:

Most Recruitment and Search Firm Owners struggle for clients, struggle for leads and don’t make as much money as they would like… So unless you want to experience the same… Do the opposite of what they’re doing…

Here are just a few examples…

1. The majority of Recruitment and Search Firm Owners don’t email regularly, and the emails they send are boring, PC, and full of stuff no one but them cares about; so I encourage my clients to email regularly, and their emails are fun, interesting to read and something their market wants to receive! I’m yet to meet a Recruitment and Search Firm Owner who’s results haven’t improved when doing this.

2. Most Recruitment and Search Firm Owners are at the beck and call of their market and complain that their clients don’t take them seriously; I encourage my clients to make their market jump through hoops in order to get to them. The result? Better clients who treat them like the ‘paid expert’ rather than the ‘hired help’.

3. The vast majority of Recruitment and Search Firm Owners only have two or three methods for attracting new clients into their business… And then complain that they don’t attract all the new business they need! I encourage my clients to have as many methods for bringing in new business as possible!

More recently this philosophy has had me sitting down doing some serious thinking about lead generation and the business growth thing…

And about how many Recruitment and Search Firm Owners aren’t getting the results they want in this area! It’s one of the reasons I’ve decided to open up applications to join my private client list.
