I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed last night and I came across an article talking about this pastor who had just signed a 6-year contract with a new church.
Now, I’m not religious, so ordinarily, I’d show no interest in this type of thing.
But the headline of this particular article caught my attention. It read:
“Steven Furtick Signs 6-Year, $110 Million Contract With Lakewood Church”
I’m starting to think I’m in the wrong profession.
Religious organisations are geniuses when it comes to marketing and sales.
(Which is why some churches can afford to pay athlete type salaries to pastors if they have a big enough following and will bring more members through the door.)
And almost all of them follow the same basic formula to gain followers.
They use EMOTION to SELL you on their way of doing things…
Their primary message is…
“Follow my way of living, and you get to go to heaven and receive endless pleasure…”
Or…
“Go against my way of living, and you’ll end up in hell and receive endless pain and torture…”
I’m not religious myself…
But whether you are or not, you can’t argue with how effective this message has been for centuries…
We’re hard wired to avoid pain and move towards pleasure…
So get someone to BELIEVE that doing one thing will lead to the most intense pleasure they can imagine, and doing the other will lead to an eternity filled with endless excruciating pain, you can get them to do almost anything…
Think about all the crazy stuff people are willing to do for their perception of a particular religion.
They’ll go to their place of worship regularly and pray,
They’ll sacrifice anything including sex, friends, shelter and food,
You’ll even get some people who are crazy enough to kill and torture and bunch on innocent people,
All for their perception of a particular religion…
My point is…
This is something you can (and should) use in your Recruitment or Search Business too…
Ethically use EMOTION to SELL your services!
Be very clear on the pleasure someone gets from buying services from YOU, above anyone else…
And the pain they could be letting themselves in for if they don’t…
