One of my all time favorite films is “Shutter Island’ starring Leonardo Dicaprio…
Without going too deep into the plot… The main character played by Dicaprio, kills his wife… And instead of facing reality, and dealing with what he had done… he creates this whole fictional world in his mind where instead of being a killer, he’s a police officer there to “protect and serve”…
It’s one of my favorites for many reasons… It got all the makings of a classic…
But in the main I think I enjoyed it so much because I wasn’t actually expecting it to be good…
The first time I saw it was one of the few times I sat down to watch a film without any real expectation of what I’d get… I hadn’t seen it advertised and no one had told me about it, so I watched it with a completely open mind…
And I’m glad I did too…
Sometimes I think that all the adverts and hype can ruin films…
I’ve lost count at the amount of times I’ve sat down to watch a film on the back of the promotional campaign and find myself feeling disappointed because they’ve already shown all the best bits as part of their marketing…
Anyway… Back to Shutter Island.
My favorite quote in the film is right at the end at, the climax of the big twist when Dicaprio turns to his co-star and says:
“Sometimes it’s better to die a hero, than live a monster”
I’m not sure if that’s the exact quote… But you get the idea!
I won’t ruin the film for you too much just in case you haven’t seen it… but a lot of people pass that sentence off as meaningless dialogue between two characters… In my opinion, the few seconds whist that sentence is coming out of Decaprio’s mouth is the most important part of the film! And makes the story what it is…
It’s a quote that reminds how so many of the Recruitment and Search Firm owners I come across run and market their business…
Shielding themselves from the reality of what’s really going on in their business and choosing the “die as a hero” instead…
