The adversity of being a millionaire white dude

I opened the ‘Sky News’ app on my iPhone this morning to see that Bono, (the U2 frontman) has won an award…

But not just any award…

He’s become the first MAN to win Glamour’s ‘Women of The Year’ Award.

I thought it was a typo or a joke at first… But I checked it out, and sure enough, he’s been voted “Woman of The Year” beating a host of nominees including…

Gwen Stefani (Lead singer of ‘no doubt’)
Simon Biles (Olympian and world record breaker)
Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi (Founders of #BlackLivesMatter)
Ashley Graham (the first size-16 model ever to land the cover of ‘Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue)
Christine Lagarde (The first female finance minister of France)
Nadia Murad (the 23-year-old girl that escaped ISIS)
Miuccia Prada (Fashion Designer)
Zendaya (Actor, activist and Fashion Designer)
“Emily Doe” (Sexual assault survivor)
I must admit… I didn’t know anything about the award before today, but looking down that list, I’m quite shocked he won…

I mean… He’s a bloke!

I would have thought the minimum criteria for winning this particular award would be that you had to be female… Or at least identify as a woman.

Even he acknowledged how ridiculous it was!

And as you can probably imagine… some people all over the internet are pretty pissed about it…

Bono actually read out some of the ‘angry’ tweets during his acceptance speech!

This one, in particular, made me laugh –

“Out of all the women alive, #Bono is my favorite. It’s just so inspiring how she overcame the adversity of being a millionaire white dude.”

But you know what… No matter how pissed off, annoyed or confused people are about him winning, It ain’t gonna change anything.

It’s done!

But all of this reminded me of something I see VERY often in the Recruitment/Search industry…

I’ve seen some of the better, more qualified, more experienced Recruitment and Search Firm Owners LOSE clients to businesses who are about as qualified as a male in the ‘Woman of the Year’ award category…

I’ve seen some of the smaller organisations compete with the big boys… and WIN!

And I’ve seen the Recruitment and Search Firm Owners who offer their services at a higher price win business over their cheaper competitors…

And all of this serves as an important reminder…

It doesn’t matter how good you are at what you do, your prices, your experience, your qualifications, the size of your list or your gender…

The Recruitment/Search Firm Owner who wins the business is the one whose better at marketing and sales!
