I’ve shared this story a few times…
But it’s a story that changed the way I viewed things back when I had my Recruitment Business…
And I was recently talking to a client in the States who mentioned how this one story has changed his Recruitment Business from one that generated one or two leads per week, to one that generates too many leads to handle…
If I remember rightly, I first came across this story in one of Dan Kennedy’s books, I can’t remember which one. But I’ve heard it told several times since and if you “get it” can be transformational to your business…
“A man was relaxing on the beach in Hawaii, soaking up the sun and watching the waves crash against the shore in the distance, when a local fisherman drove up in his pick-up truck… He got out with a dozen fishing rods… Not one, but a dozen…
He then baited each hook, cast all the lines into the ocean and set the rods in the sand…
Intrigued, the man wandered over and asked him for an explanation…
His reply:
“It’s simple… I love fish, but I hate fishing. I like eating, not catching…. So I cast 12 lines. By sunset, some of them will have caught a fish, never all of ‘em. So if I only cast one or two lines, I might go hungry… But 12 is enough so some always catch….
Usually, there’s enough for me and extras to sell to local restaurants. This way I live the life I want…”
Sounds like a very simplistic approach… But your Recruitment or Search business should be running in pretty much the same way…
In this metaphor, each fishing rod represents a method for bringing in new clients…
Some will catch…
Others will not…
But overall, you’ll attract enough clients to enable you to live the life you want….
Makes sense, right?
The problem is, most Recruitment and Search Business Owners only have 1-5 methods for generating leads…
Usually cold calling, referrals, their existing network and on very rare occasions a couple others too…
Some months these methods work perfectly! Their business will thrive, they’ll have almost too many clients and everything looks good…
But some months these methods don’t quite “catch” and they’re forced to go hungry…
This happens for a number of reasons…
But the bottom line is, all things being equal, more rods equals more fish…
And more methods for attracting clients equals more leads…
If you only have 1-5 methods for generating leads and you don’t have enough clients… The answer is staring them in the face…
But the good news is, it’s a problem that can be quickly fixed…
