On Monday, I received a phone call from my youngest sister telling me my oldest sister had had a heart attack…
It happened on the Sunday night…
For the second time in about 5 years… And things didn’t look good!
So I cleared my day, hopped in the car and rushed down to London (about a 2 hour from where I am) to visit her in hospital…
Obviously fearing the worst…
But when I got to the hospital… The bed she was meant to be in was empty…
She was nowhere in sight…
I don’t claim to be a medical professional by any stretch of the imagination… But it’s strange for someone who’s just had a heart attack to be anywhere but in bed, right?
Well… imagine the shock of my face to find out that not only wasn’t she in bed… But she was actually outside!
Wait for it….
Smoking a cigarette!
Again, I’m not a medical professional but KNOW for sure that can’t be good for you at any time, let alone hours after a heart attack…
Your second heart attack…
And I was fuming!
I didn’t show it, and managed to bite my tongue…
But I’d just cleared my whole day, cancelled on clients, cancelled on prospects to rush down to London…
In that moment, I felt like I cared more for her health and wellbeing than she did…
Why would anyone sabotage their health like this?
Then it hit me…. We ALL do this….
Perhaps not with our health (although probably with our health) …
But in our businesses, relationships, other areas of our life we sabotage our own success and do things that to an outsider makes no sense….
I recognise the behaviour in myself…
And I see it almost daily with Recruitment and Search Business Owners too…
Smoking a cigarette after a heart attack is perhaps and extreme example… But where are you doing this in your life?
